Before agreeing to any work, take time to check the business and make sure you understand what is being offered.
Check qualifications and insurance
Ask to see appropriate qualifications, registrations and insurance where relevant. For gas work, check the Gas Safe Register. For certain electrical work, check the appropriate competent person scheme or building control requirements.
Agree the scope and price
Request a written quotation describing the work, materials, timescales, payment stages and any applicable guarantees.
Protect your payments
Be cautious about requests for unusually large upfront payments. Keep records of messages, invoices and receipts.
Raise concerns promptly
